WHAT IS A DOULA?
From the ancient Greek meaning “mothering the mother”, a doula offers non-medical labor and delivery support. Prenatally she provides preparation, education and support for the birth. Postnatally she provides support in parenting, healing and breastfeeding. During labor and delivery she offers continuous reassurance and helps alleviate pain with comfort measures. She is an advocate, an educator, and a friend. Many clients develop a birth plan with the doula and the caregiver. The doula may offer information regarding medical interventions and support an informed choice about those interventions. The doula supports the plan and the mother who creates it but honors changes to the plan.
